Unbelievable that it is 2024 and it looks like women still have no treatment to stop hot flashes! Yet many women suffer from all different kinds of symptoms of the menopause. But where is the science???
Estrogen- our friend!
Menopause brings about significant hormonal changes. Estrogen is believed to be involved in regulating body temperature. Hot flashes affect 50 to 80% of women going through menopause, they experience a real ordeal every day, even if the duration of these varies from a few seconds to a few minutes.
When hormones run riot!
In the list of symptoms, we also note sleep disturbances due to night sweats, which can have an impact on mood and daytime functioning.
Symptoms of the menopause (called vasomotor symptoms) in some women cause vaginal dryness, as well as changes to their sex life, such as loss of libido.
Hot flashes experienced during the menopause are the main reason women seek medical advice or take dietary supplements.
We are still waiting for a miracle treatment which is capable of calming hormonal fluctuations, and yes I do say miracle, because for some time now we have been able to go to the moon, but treating hot flashes is obviously impossible!
Here are some tips before NASA intervenes, to reduce hot flashes! These are simple and quick solutions to implement in your daily life.
Here are our tips:
Wear different layers of clothing:
Wear light, loose clothing made from natural fibers such as cotton. Stay cool by layering your outfits in breathable fabrics which allow heat to exit easily and sleep on bedding that allows humidity to dissipate too. In winter, for example, do not just wear a heavy sweater. Instead, put on a cotton sweater or shirt. You can find t-shirts suitable for post-menopausal women in certain outlets, which absorb sweat perfectly and at the same time provide freshness for your body.
Monitor the temperature of the house:
Reduce the temperature of your heating so that air can circulate freely. You can also use a fan or an air conditioner. As for the heating in winter, we suggest that you lower it to a reasonable temperature for the room, i.e. 19°.
Take deep breaths:
Breathe in and out ... Breathing deeply helps relieve hot flashes. You just need to breathe deeply through your nose until your diaphragm contracts. Try deep, slow abdominal breathing (6 to 8 breaths per minute). Practice deep breathing for 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes in the evening and when a hot flash occurs.
Do meditation and Yoga:
Yoga and meditation help reduce stress. They will even help restore your hormone production to its stable state.
Stop poisoning your body:
So, forget about cigarettes. Avoid stimulants and alcohol as they cause hot flashes and mood swings. Give preference to herbal infusions, consider cleansing green teas and mother tinctures.
Adopt a healthy diet:
Also consider adding soy to your diet. “Some people find that eating tofu and edamame or drinking soy milk keeps hot flashes away,” says Dr. Minkin. Eat more vegetables and foods rich in vitamin E. Avoid eating spicy foods. Eat foods rich in estrogen, such as flax seeds, lentils, soybeans ... see our article: natural alternatives to get through the transition.
Try alternative medicine:
Alternative medicines, such as homeopathy, aromatherapy, Bach flowers, herbal medicine and acupuncture, are less aggressive for your body and your immune system.
Adopt good reflexes by consulting a doctor when your hot flashes become too bothersome or are accompanied by other signs (dizziness, headache, nausea, depression) or if you have a history of gynecological diseases or breast cancer.
